Abstract

Abstract Background: The National Medical Commission (NMC) introduced attitude, ethics, and communication (AETCOM) modules under the competency-based medical education curriculum to address the affective domain of medical training. These modules aim to equip Indian Medical Graduates with competencies essential for ethical practice, effective communication, and social accountability. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) regarding AETCOM modules among undergraduate (MBBS) medical students and to identify factors influencing these domains. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among second- and third-year MBBS students at PES Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, during July–August 2022. A pretested, structured questionnaire based on the NMC AETCOM modules was administered electronically using Google Forms. The tool assessed demographic details and 15 items across the KAP domains. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Descriptive statistics were presented as mean ± standard deviation, frequencies, and percentages. Associations were tested using the Chi-square test, with P < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 300 eligible students, 199 participated (response rate: 66.3%). Among them, 49.3% were second-year students, and 50.8% were 3 rd -year students; 55.8% were female. Overall, 59.8% demonstrated average knowledge and 39.7% good knowledge of AETCOM. The majority (76.4%) had an average attitude, while 22.1% had a good attitude. Regarding practice, 60.3% reported good practices. Knowledge and practice were significantly associated with academic performance ( P = 0.05). Female students tended to have a more favorable attitude ( P = 0.054). No significant associations were observed with year of study, mode of admission, or socioeconomic status. Conclusion: Most students showed average knowledge and attitude, with good adherence to AETCOM principles. Academic performance and gender influenced outcomes, underscoring the need for continuous reinforcement and better integration of AETCOM into clinical teaching.
