Abstract This article presents a comprehensive study on Tian Jinqin (田进勤), a pioneering figure in Chinese electronic music. Through biographical research and analysis of his contributions, our study reveals how Tian Jinqin integrated traditional Chinese music with electronic instrument design. He established a framework based on what he called string-controlled instruments, embodied in the XK instrument, which enables electronic sounds to be played with the nuances of Chinese musical articulation. As a study outcome, we present a catalog of his instruments and publications, which played a significant role in shaping the evolution of electronic music in China.
