Measure 3.3 'NFDI Commons' (M3.3) is a central communication hub between various NFDI4Earth workspaces, including other national consortia, universities, research institutions, public authorities, Research Data Management (RDM) initiatives, and funding organisations involved in promoting (geo-)spatial research data and its management. Moreover, M3.3 addresses cross-cutting topics within the Earth System Sciences (ESS) community, such as the management of metadata to facilitate cross-disciplinary sharing of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data (Wilkinson et al., 2016). This document describes past and ongoing activities regarding the development and use of metadata schemes in NFDI4Earth, in the NFDI section metadata as well as its task force on metadata (as of June 2025). The focus is set on metadata for data in ESS and related disciplines. Activities beyond NFDI4Earth are also acknowledged -- drawing on literature and web research. Further, this description of the status quo does address concepts, applications and opportunities for the harmonisation of metadata schemas and formats within NFDI4Earth across research domains.
