Indigenous peoples in Brazil: Historical trajectories and contemporary perspectives in census representation

From both historical and contemporary perspectives, this article presents an overview of the trajectory of the quantification of Indigenous peoples through national population censuses in Brazil's official statistics. Since the first national census in the late nineteenth century, census instruments largely operated as mechanisms of statistical invisibility; beginning in the 1990s, however, in association with sociopolitical transformations in the country, this pattern was reversed. The Brazilian experience is situated within broader Latin American transformations in census practices. Special attention is given to the 2010 and 2022 censuses, which introduced expanded questions on ethnic affiliation and language, improved territorial coverage, and increased Indigenous participation. The 2022 Census represents the most comprehensive statistical operation ever conducted in Brazil regarding Indigenous peoples, incorporating significant conceptual, methodological, and territorial innovations. The census recorded 1,694,836 Indigenous individuals, representing an 88% increase compared to the 2010 Census and marking the first time the census count exceeded one million people (0.83% of the Brazilian population). Results from the 2022 Census reveal increased urban presence, widespread territorial dispersion, and remarkable ethnic and linguistic diversity among Indigenous peoples. Despite the array of issues related to the application of Western categories—as is the case with census operations worldwide—these findings underscore the central role of official statistics in documenting both Indigenous sociodiversity as well as patterns of inequality in socioeconomic indicators, both of which are essential for informing public policies. This article argues that census quantification has become a critical arena of political dispute, recognition, and self-determination for Indigenous peoples in contemporary Brazil and Latin America.
