ABSTRACT A common subject in engineering disciplines is the study of flow in and around fractures or channels with adjacent porous domains. In this work, a unified approach based on the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) with an embedded Phase‐Field (PF) fracture model is used to investigate a flow scenario, where a channel separates two porous domains with different geometric and hydraulic properties. This investigation reveals clear differences in the flow behaviour on either side of the channel and discusses consequences with regard to the design of micromodels, commonly used in porous‐media research.
