Monteiroa Krapovickas is a genus essentially South-Brazilian, with one species reaching Uruguay and Argentina and another exclusive to the southeastern region of Brazil. So far, 11 species are known, including one recently described, M. rubra. The species of the genus grow mainly in wetlands and river margins. This synopsis includes a taxonomic key, illustrations, information about habitat, maps with geographical distribution, nomenclatural and taxonomic notes, general comments on the biology, ecology and conservation status for all the species. Two names were lectotypified Malvastrum bullatum and Malvastrum dusenii, basionyms of Monteiroa bullata and Monteiroa dusenii, respectively. For nine species, photos of them in their habitat are presented for the first time, with the exception of M. leitei and M. triangularifolia. Seven species were considered threatened, five Endangered (EN), M. dusenii, M. hatschbachii, M. ptarmicifolia, M. rubra, M. smithii and two Critically Endangered (CR), M. leitei and M. triangularifolia.
