The latest publications signed by the late academician Silviu Berejan exclusively referred to issues that target both the progress and the impediments to the development of the Romanian language between the Prut and the Dniester: "The official functioning of two languages in the Republic of Moldova - an obstacle to the European integration of this country" (Berejan, 2006, pp. 39-43); "The situation of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova from the perspective of European integration" (Berejan, 2006, pp. 63-68); "The degradation of oral speech in a state where two official languages function in parallel" (Berejan, 2007, pp. 28-32). Two decades later, Prof. Silviu Berejan's findings remain just as valid, and, in the context of the accession negotiations to the European Union, the need to develop a new language policy is more relevant than ever.
