This article examines the evolution of understanding of the phenomenon of "secularization" within the framework of theological discourse. The study of the issue includes a variety of opinions of various experts, starting with the use of it by Henry II of Orleans in the context of the rejection of part of church property, and ending with the analysis of the positions of Western and domestic researchers such as Charles Taylor and John Milbank, A.V. Danilov and D.K. Beznyuk. The above-mentioned scientists propose polar directions to understanding secularization in modern society.
