This paper is a review of computer-assisted language learning development (CALL). The author considers the origin of the name, analyses types of specialized applications, and modern trends of CALL improvement. They are: AI usage, gamification, virtual and augmented reality, shift to usage of mobile devices, microlearning. As an example the author describes the usage of language learning app Duolingo in higher school teaching.
