Abstract On the basis of a field study in Sierra County, California, the authors find that defect in red fir averages 4 percent of the volume table figures for limby tops likely to be left on the ground, 3 percent for shake, and 1 percent for breakage. Additional deductions must be made for trees in which there is butt rot.
