The agricultural sector is one of the most important and dynamic sectors of the national economy of the Republic of Moldova, as an important part of the rural population is engaged in agriculture. Moreover, other branches of the national economy depend on its development and evolution (transportation, manufactu-ring industry, exports, domestic trade, services in agriculture, HORECA, etc.). Therefore, the modernization of the sector is a necessary imperative for ensuring its good functioning, increasing competitiveness and efficiency indicators, as well as ensuring the well-being of the population. The purpose of the paper is to present an overview of the current state of the agricultural sector and to identify the subsectors that require specific interventions in order to modernize them. To achieve this goal, the following research methods were used: analysis and synthesis, method of comparison, induction and deduction, as well as the evalua-tion of agricultural policies based on the OECD methodology and the SWOT analysis. The results obtained are not only based on the hypothesis that, in the current conditions, the process of modernization of the agricultural sector is no longer viewed only through the prism of its technology, through the intensive pro-cessing of land to obtain increased harvests, through structural transformations or the excessive amplifica-tion of incomes, but also on the revitalization of certain subsectors and their positive transformation. Thus, a series of subsectors that need to be modernized were identified through the SWOT analysis.
