This study explores the need for moral and civic education using literature as a solution to the problem of hate. Hate is a complex emotion formed in moral and so cial contexts, and cognitive correction and empathy are essential for addressing it. Based on a conceptual understanding of hate, the instructor provided students with a variety of literary texts on the themes of queer phobia, ableism, misogyny and ageism. This allowed students to expand their conceptual understanding of hate, explore real-life examples, achieve a deeper understanding through re-read ing, and ultimately explore and propose solutions to the problem of hate. This study presents the possibility of moral and civic education that aims to overcome the problem of hate through cognitive remediation to understand the concept of hate, as well as literacy development to understand the other. Such an educational approach could play an important role in tackling the problem of hate.
