The problem of death is one of the main challenges for philosophers of all times and nations. The article examines attempts to philosophically overcome the inexorable nature of death and search for psychological me-chanisms to protect the human being from the inevitable ending. An attempt has been made to divide philosophers considering the topic of death into two main directions — naturalistic and spiritualistic one. Another variant of the attitude towards death is the idea of immortality in the works of philosophers. The limitations of philosophy when it is faced with the problem of death are noted. Only religion or religious philosophy can open the door to hope, pre-senting death not as an absolute end, but as a transition to another reality, to immortality or eternal life. Awareness of death will help give meaning to the human existence.
