BACKGROUND Depressive disorder is a common mental health disorder that can affect both mental and physical health. Its co-occurrence with chronic diseases and significant contribution to disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) underscores the imperative for thorough research into its global burden, particularly among adolescents and young adults. OBJECTIVE This study leveraged data from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 METHODS This study leveraged data from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019, concentrating on the incidence, prevalence, and DALYs associated with dysthymia and major depressive disorder (MDD) in individuals aged 15-39 years. We calculated age-standardized incidence rates to elucidate disparities in the burden of depression over time by region, gender, and age. Joinpoint regression analysis was utilized to discern temporal trends. RESULTS The analysis revealed pronounced gender disparities in both the incidence and DALYs of depression in 2019, with females exhibiting higher rates. Globally, age-standardized rates for dysthymia in adolescents and young adults have escalated over the past two decades, while MDD rates have declined, albeit with a minor resurgence in the past nine years. Notable worldwide variations in the incidence and DALYs rates of depression were found, with Greenland recording the highest rates. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the complex and evolving nature of the global burden of depressive disorders among adolescents and young adults, pointing to the necessity of tailored interventions that address socio-economic and gender disparities. The rising trend of dysthymia and fluctuating incidence of MDD across different regions call for deeper exploration into the factors driving these patterns. CLINICALTRIAL not applicable
