The article discusses the concept of probation, its purpose and objectives, as well as the relevance of the adoption of the relevant federal law in modern realities. It is noted that the probation institute is the most important tool for social adaptation, re-socialization, and social rehabilitation of convicts, but in our country it is at the initial stage of functioning. To determine the directions for improving this institution and the practice of its implementation, the international experience of probation is analyzed. It has been established that in a number of countries probation has been used for a long time, and helps prisoners to join social processes after release, and society to accept former convicts. Based on foreign experience, it is concluded that an effective measure to achieve the goal of probation is the creation of artificial conditions for prisoners’ self- government. Taking into account the constant digitalization of various spheres of public life, the creation of these conditions is proposed to be carried out using virtual reality programs for the education of convicts, the development of social skills, professional skills training, diagnostics and correction of behavior of convicts.
