Collective care and solidarity as resistance: An analysis of the Life in Leggings movement and Caribbean feminism

Abstract This article examines the Life in Leggings movement, a Caribbean feminist initiative that emerged in response to pervasive gender-based violence in the region. By analyzing its evolution from an online campaign with hashtags to a grassroots movement, the study highlights how collective care, resistance, and direct actions are central to challenging systemic gender oppression. Practices such as online testimonies (#LifeinLeggings), regional protests like Reclaim Our Streets, and long-term initiatives, including Pink Parliament, are examined as part of the movement’s broader effort to dismantle the colonial legacies of race and gender. The article also explores the transformative impact of digital platforms in amplifying women’s voices and promoting solidarity. Furthermore, it documents the movement’s efforts to create sustainable social change through educational and artistic projects. Overall, Life in Leggings demonstrates how feminist activism bridges online and community efforts to combat deep-seated violence and inequality.
