The advent of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) promises a transformative leap in wireless communication and electromagnetic systems. However, the complexity and costs associated with cable connections that are currently necessary both for control mechanisms and powering of the RIS seriously hinder their practical deployment. In this paper, we introduce the concept of wireless RIS with the potential to revolutionize their installation and potential utilization. To do so, we propose to leverage legacy telecommunication standards such as GSM to bring both their control and power supply to RIS through electromagnetic waves. We illustrate our proposal with an RFID tag integrated into a patch-based RIS unit-cell. The simulated design demonstrates the feasibility of this wireless vision. This research showcases the potential of wireless RIS to reshape the landscape of wireless communication and electromagnetic systems, offering a glimpse of a promising future in the domain.
