The relevance of the article's topic is linked to the disclosure and explanation of the main provisions of the minimalist theory of legal obligation by German philosopher of law Lorenz Köhler, which are presented in the article “On the Minimalist Understanding of Legal Obligation” published in this issue. The subject of the study is the ontology of legal obligations, manifested in such necessary properties as action orientation, indication of the obligated person, and normative requirement. The purpose of the work is to present the theory of the German philosopher of law through a critical analysis of its individual elements. The main research methods are historical-philosophical analysis and contextual interpretation. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that, for the first time in Russian, the original theory of legal obligation, unlike anything else in contemporary legal literature, is examined. The main conclusions of the article are the explication of the main arguments of L. Köhler's theory of legal obligation.
