The first encounter between most faculty and generative artificial intelligence came in fall semester of 2022, when student papers suddenly started appearing with nonsensical citations and made‐up evidence. Faculty‐recognized errors increased radically in Spring 2023, when it became clear that they were the result of AI “hallucinations,” the tendency for AI output to produce factual errors and fictitious quotations.
