The digital transformation of higher education has significantly reshaped teaching–learning processesacross the globe, presenting both opportunities and challenges for academic professionals. In India, andparticularly in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, the transition to digitally mediated education hasbeen uneven due to geographical, infrastructural, and institutional disparities. The COVID-19pandemic acted as a catalyst, compelling higher education institutions to rapidly adopt online andblended teaching models. While this shift ensured academic continuity, it simultaneously exposedmultiple challenges faced by teachers in adapting to digital platforms, pedagogies and assessmentmechanisms. This study examines the major challenges encountered by teachers in the digital era, withspecial reference to higher education institutions in Uttarakhand, using a secondary data–basedresearch approach.The study draws upon data from authoritative sources such as AISHE reports, NAAC peer teamevaluations, UGC policy documents, Ministry of Education publications and peer-reviewed researcharticles published between 2015 and 2025. The analysis highlights that teachers face multifacetedchallenges including inadequate digital infrastructure, limited access to reliable internet connectivityin remote and hilly regions, insufficient digital pedagogical training, increased workload, technostress,and difficulties in online student engagement and assessment. These challenges are more pronouncedin government degree colleges and rural institutions compared to urban universities and privateinstitutions in the state.The findings further indicate that while post-COVID initiatives such as SWAYAM, NPTEL, ARPIT, andonline Faculty Development Programs have improved digital awareness and technical skills amongteachers, gaps persist in advanced instructional design, online evaluation methods, and institutionalsupport systems. The absence of structured digital capacity-building policies and incentivemechanisms has also affected teacher motivation and professional satisfaction.This study contributes to the existing literature by providing a region-specific understanding of digitalchallenges in higher education, emphasizing Uttarakhand’s unique socio-geographical context. Thepaper concludes that addressing these challenges requires coordinated policy intervention, improveddigital infrastructure, continuous professional development, and institutional commitment to supportteachers in navigating the digital era effectively.
