Southern hemisphere circulation patterns and associated anomalies for the austral autumn 2001 (March to May) are reviewed, with emphasis given to the Pacific Basic and Australian region. The ‘weak’ positive phase of the Southern Oscillation which began in spring 2000 went through a rapid change in autumn indicating a return to the neutral state.
