Abstract The need for measures to introduce the best environmental practices for reducing the potential biological hazard of the waste from nuclear power engineering is discussed. An appropriate clause is now a part of the new Energy Strategy of the Russian Federation. To this end, the maturity of various approaches to the hazard evaluation is assessed. The most mature approach to the safety analysis of the radioactive waste disposal is based on the observance of the in-force regulations in the field of safety control when using atomic energy and on the internationally accepted approaches to ensuring the safety of the present and future generations of humans and living nature. There are no grounds to introduce additional parameters ignoring the radionuclide behavior in the environment and rational scenarios of the human activity.
