University roles in knowledge production and dissemination are crucial for academic advancement and policy-making, especially within developing countries like Ethiopia where universities play a significant role in research and education. A comparative analytical approach was employed, involving data from official university reports, academic publications, and interviews with stakeholders. Quantitative analysis of research outputs and qualitative insights from institutional representatives were integrated to provide a comprehensive overview. University activities in African Studies have shown a notable increase in publication metrics over the last decade, particularly in journals indexed by international databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. Ethiopian universities are pivotal actors in knowledge production within their academic communities but face challenges including limited funding and infrastructural gaps that hinder full potential realization. Strategic investments should be directed towards enhancing research infrastructure, fostering collaborative networks with international counterparts, and implementing policies that promote equitable access to resources for all disciplines.
