Abstract Shankar Prasad Bhattacharyya, an internationally renowned scholar, educator, and pioneer in the field of control systems, passed away on July 3, 2024, at the age of 78 after a brief illness. Over a distinguished career spanning more than five decades, Professor Bhattacharyya made transformative contributions to control systems research and inspired generations of engineers, researchers, and students around the globe. In honor of Professor Bhattacharyya’s impact, we have assembled in this issue four papers, comprising a Special Collection in Memory of Professor Shankar Prasad Bhattacharyya. The remainder of this tribute is organized as follows: First, we provide a brief obituary of Professor Bhattacharyya (this has been largely adapted, and used with permission, from the IFAC August Newsletter, which was co-authored by three of us (Keel, Moore, and Vilma Oliveira) along with Romeo Ortega, of the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico). Then, we provide a summary of Professor Bhattacharyya’s research contributions. Finally, we preview the papers included in the collection section.
