By 2020, an estimated 15% of the global population will experience mental illness requiring inpatient care. Registered nurses form the largest workforce in these settings, yet there is an international shortage of nurses willing to specialize in mental health. Key deterrents include workplace violence, high stress, and limited career advancement. This study explored the workplace experiences of registered nurses in an acute inpatient mental health facility. Thirteen nurses participated in individual interviews and focus groups. A central theme was the importance of therapeutic relationships, emphasizing the specialized skills needed to care effectively for clients and the rewarding nature of nurse-client interactions. Findings highlighted strong professional pride, resilience, and dedication, offering a refreshed perspective on mental health nursing. The study underscores the need to foster therapeutic relationships and address workplace challenges to support and retain nurses in mental health care.
