In this thesis we investigated how analysis of specific clinical settings and application of advanced statistical methodology on high-quality observational data can be used to investigate complex research questions in the field of hematology. We studied two clinical settings: allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for patients with acute leukemia and immunosuppressive therapy for patients with acquired aplastic anemia. By applying multi-state and joint models on detailed observational data we could capture complex recovery and failure patterns and their underlying mechanisms.
