Elderly population in India as well as worldwide is increasing rapidly over years. Being one of the most vulnerable groups of the society, elderly persons have more likelihood of chronic morbidities as well as disabilities. The objectives of the present study are to assess the bivariate association between various types of morbidities with disability and also to examine the adjusted effect of disability on status of morbidities. A total of 400 elderly persons aged 60 years and above of Jorhat district, Assam were included in this cross-sectional studies. The study subjects were interviewed using a structured questionnaire containing a reliable and valid assessment scales namely Katz ADL and Lawton and Broody Instrumental ADL. Again all morbidities were assessed as in ICD-10. Basic statistical tools and Logistic Regression Model were used for analysis. Analyses were done using Statistical software SPSS. Overall prevalence of physical disability, ADL and IADL was found to be 80.0%, 5.2% and 15.8 respectively among the elderly persons. All disabilities were found to be increasing with increasing age. HBP, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer etc. were the most prevalent morbidities in the study area. Positive association was found between various types of morbidities with disability. The results of logistic regression analysis revealed that elderly persons with multiple morbidity were more likely to have various types of disabilities such as physical disability, ADL disability and IADL disability.
