Formulation and Evaluation of Albendazole Gummies for Pediatrics

Albendazole gummies are a new, patient-friendly oral dosage form intended to enhance patient compliance and efficacy in the treatment of helminthic infections. Albendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic that has been widely used for the treatment of parasitic infections such as ascariasis, hookworm, trichuriasis etc. Albendazole exerts its action by inhibiting microtubule polymerization through selective binding to β-tubulin in parasitic cells, thereby inhibiting glucose uptake and glycogen depletion, ultimately resulting in the immobilization and death of parasites. The use of a gummy delivery system is intended to overcome the limitations of conventional tablet dosage forms, especially in pediatric and geriatric patients, who may have difficulty swallowing and poor palatability. Preliminary formulation studies suggest that albendazole gummies can provide acceptable physicochemical stability, dose uniformity, and in vitro dissolution properties comparable to those of conventional oral tablets.
