Background The association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and the rising incidence of mucormycosis has been increasingly explored as the recent pandemic has evolved. Objectives In this study, we aimed to document the concurrent infection with COVID-19 and mucormycosis in Egyptian patients during the period in a single tertiary healthcare center and to study the clinicopathologic features in those patients. Patients and methods This retrospective study included a total of 65 cases of mucormycosis infection among patients who are confirmed to have COVID-19 infection in Ain Shams University Hospital. Histologic examination using hematoxylin and eosin and Periodic Acid Sciff stain was confirmatory for diagnosis of mucormycosis. Results Most of our cases presented with rhino-orbital-cerebral manifestation. 13.8% of our patients have confirmed diagnosis of diabetes, and 55.4% were recently treated with corticosteroids. On histologic assessment, bone involvement was more obviously encountered in diabetics, as compared to nondiabetics in our cases. Conclusion During the era of COVID-19, mucormycosis stood out as a frequent complication of the viral infection, especially in diabetics, or patients on steroid therapy with a predilection to rhino-orbital and cerebral localization.
