Center rot caused by Pantoea ananatis is a widely prevalent bacterial disease of onion in the southeastern United States. P. ananatis infection leads to yellowish-brown discoloration and rotting of internal scales. This report evaluates the screening of 48 commercial onion cultivars, grown in Vidalia, Georgia, against P. ananatis using a whole bulb inoculation assay. Onion bulbs were inoculated with P. ananatis (PNA 97-1), and the bulb rot severity was evaluated. Results of this study could inform the Vidalia onion growers in selecting onion cultivars with comparatively less symptom severity.
