Palliative care is in demand with an aging population and rising cancer and chronic disease cases. Remote palliative care expands access to services, allowing patients to receive specialist care in the comfort of their homes. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) hold potential to deliver more holistic and personalized support throughout the remote palliative care pathway, and various AI driven solutions have been introduced in healthcare. However, many of these solutions fail to be implemented due to insufficient attention to user needs and care context. To address this gap, this study takes a co-creation approach involving 11 healthcare professionals (HCPs). From HCPs’ perspectives, we map out challenges in the current remote palliative care pathway and explore where and how AI could contribute to more holistic care. By showcasing a tailored co-creation process, five opportunity areas, and practical design examples developed with HCPs, this study advances knowledge on designing user-centered AI in healthcare.
