On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Luigi Ciamician (1857–1922) this article summarizes the life and career of this Italian-Armenian founder of green chemistry with emphasis on his work on pyrroles, plant chemistry, photochemistry, solar energy, the environment, and politics.
