Abstract A taxonomy of 43 multiple-choice item-writing rules is presented and discussed. The taxonomy derives from an analysis of 46 authoritative textbooks and other sources in the educational measurement literature. The analysis also leads to a "validity by consensus" for each rule. The taxonomy is viewed as a complete and authoritative set of guidelines for writing multiple-choice items.
