ARCUS was commissioned by Oulsnam Design to carry out an archaeological watching brief as a condition of the planning consent for alterations to the former Boughtons, Goldstones Antiques and Derbyshire Centre at Avenel Court, King Street, Bakewell, Derbyshire (ref: NP/DDD/0401/155) granted by the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA). The site (NGR SK 2169 6846) is located within the centre of the historic core of the market town of Bakewell, where it was believed that there was a strong possibility that archaeological material and deposits associated with activity and occupation within the area for at least the last 700 years may exist. The Conservation Archaeologist of the PDNPA therefore required that a scheme of archaeological works be implemented in conjunction with the works. During the fieldwork a small number of archaeological deposits were revealed, including a stone capped drain and a number of artefacts dating from the eighteenth and nineteenth century.
