In 2025, over a dozen Republican state attorneys general filed a lawsuit challenging the Biden administration's update to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which would have extended disability protections to individuals with gender dysphoria. (See Texas et. al. v. Becerra .) When President Trump took office, he issued executive orders limiting the promotion of gender ideology. Accordingly, disability advocates urged the states to withdraw the lawsuit, noting that the new administration is unlikely to expand transgender protections under Section 504.
