It examines demographic indicators such as fertility, mortality, and population distribution, alongside the evolution of family planning policies and contraceptive practices. The paper critically evaluates India’s National Family Welfare Programme and highlights socio-cultural challenges including gender inequality, unmet contraceptive needs, and reproductive rights issues. Legal frameworks such as the PCPNDT Act (1994) and MTP Act (1971) are discussed in relation to gender justice and public health ethics. Further, the study explores maternal and child health initiatives under the RCH framework, emphasizing safe motherhood, adolescent health, and child welfare programs. An ecological dimension is incorporated to analyze the relationship between human populations and environmental sustainability, focusing on ecosystem functions, biodiversity, and ecological stability. The paper advocates for an integrated, policy-oriented approach combining population management, healthcare systems, and environmental conservation to achieve sustainable development goals in India.
