The MSP4BIO project has developed the Ecological-Socio-Economic (ESE) Framework, which provides a structured and practical approach to support Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) processes, with the aim of protecting and restoring biodiversity while ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources. This document presents the key principles, components, and operational steps of the framework, illustrating how it integrates ecological knowledge, spatial data, and stakeholder input into planning and decision-making processes. It includes step-by-step guidance for applying the framework in real-world contexts, along with examples of methods and tools, and recommendations for further testing and application in pilot areas. The document is complemented by the MSP4BIO ESE online platform, which provides interactive access to tools, data, and functionalities supporting the implementation of the framework: https://ese.tools4msp.eu/. Overall, it aims to support planners, authorities, and stakeholders in making informed, transparent decisions that strengthen the ecological coherence and effectiveness of MSP.
