Soil degradation and desertification pose severe threats to ecological sustainability, agricultural productivity, and socioeconomic well-being in semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Kano State, located in northern Nigeria, is markedly vulnerable to intensive land use, prolonged dry seasons, overgrazing, poor soil management, and climatic variability. This study assesses the spatial extent, underlying causes, and impacts of soil degradation and desertification processes across Kano State. Using a combination of remote sensing, GIS analysis, soil sampling, and community surveys, patterns of land cover change, soil nutrient depletion, and erosion were quantified. The results reveal significant loss of vegetative cover, increased wind and water erosion, elevated soil salinity, and nutrient depletion in heavily cultivated and grazed areas. This study underscores the roles of unsustainable agricultural practices, population pressure, and climate change in driving land degradation. Recommendations emphasize integrated land management, community education, soil conservation techniques, and policy interventions to mitigate ongoing degradation and rehabilitate affected ecosystems.
