Description of a new species of carnivorous sponge, Cladorhiza silazi sp. nov., from 5,894 m depth in the Mariana region of the NW Pacific Ocean. The species was discovered through automated data mining of the NOAA Deep-Sea Coral and Sponge database using the ABYSS (Automated Biodiversity Yield from Subsea Surveys) pipeline. This represents the deepest record of a carnivorous sponge (Cladorhizidae) and the first species discovered through automated cross-referencing of observational databases against the World Register of Marine Species. Described from in situ ROV imagery in accordance with ICZN Declaration 45.
