ABSTRACT Conventional control methods for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) mainly rely on a single DC bus current sensor in single current sensor (SCS) setup. However, such approaches inherently encounter challenges associated with the reconstruction dead zone. To address these limitations, this study presents a novel single‐phase current sensor (SPCS) control strategy for PMSM, leveraging a discrete current state observer. Initially, the mathematical model of the PMSM is analyzed in the continuous‐time domain to formulate the observer equations for current prediction. Subsequently, the principles of conventional discretization techniques, including the Euler method and the Tustin method, are systematically evaluated. Finally, to mitigate the increased error associated with the Euler method during high motor speed operations and the computational complexity associated with the Tustin method, a new simplified discretization method based on the matched pole‐zero (MPZ) is proposed. Moreover, a gain matrix that adapts to speed is introduced to improve performance. Analytical evaluations of precision and stability demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves discretization accuracy while ensuring stable motor operation. Experimental results further validate the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed SPCS control strategy for PMSM.
