Purpose This study aims to examine the familiarity of artificial intelligence (AI) among university students, their usage patterns, frequency of application in academics, as well as the perceived benefits and challenges. Design/methodology/approach Printed questionnaires were distributed across various locations within the university, including different faculties, the university hall, seminar libraries, classrooms, departments and the central library of Dhaka University. In total 470 printed questionnaires were distributed, and 350 responses were received where the response rate was 74.45%. Findings This study found that majority of the students has strong AI awareness, frequently using tools like ChatGPT for assignments and idea generation. While many students engage with AI on a regular basis, they face challenges such as formulating effective queries and accessing timely information. The study shows the need for AI literacy in curricula and training resources. Addressing these issues will enhance students’ AI interactions, improving academic outcomes and research practices. Research limitations/implications This study has limitations, including a restricted sample size and demographic focus, which may not fully represent diverse student experiences. Practical implications These findings can assist the university administration, relevant departments and the university library in developing guidelines, actionable strategies and services for the ethical use of AI tools while also helping students making effective prompts for better results. Originality/value This research highlights AI’s growing role in education and calls for structured integration to ensure students use AI tools effectively and ethically. A comprehensive approach will help students maximize AI’s potential, leading to better learning experiences.
