This paper is the output of a joint Australian Research Council grant to Professor Berry and Professor Featherstone at Curtin University, Perth, Australia. This research forms the basis for all subsequent land and inland water altimetry research at DMU, was key to the awarding of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) IDEMS centre to the EAPRS lab (see http://www.igfs.net/), and was also key to winning the first River and Lake contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2003 and the ESA Cloud Profiling Radar Calibration using Natural Targets contract in 2003, both in full global competitive tender.
