In October 2014 Archaeology Wales was commissioned to carry out an archaeological desk-based assessment and site walkover on land to the south of Eccleshall, Staffordshire (NGR SJ 82926 28544 centred) prior to the submission of a planning application for residential dwellings. The site is comprises of two fields (east and west), divided by an avenue of trees, which form part of a landscape park connected to Johnson Hall to the south of the site. Eccleshall Castle, a Scheduled Monument, lies within a wooded area on the northern limit of a 1km search zone located around the site boundary. No designated historic landscapes lie within this search zone. The High Street of Eccleshall is a conservation area and contains many listed buildings designated for their architectural interest. The closest of these is Eagle House (Grade II), which lies along Cross Butts to the north of the site.
