Continuing developments in computer technology will make teaching literature in the future some- thing quite different from what it is today. Hypertext, which has been in existence for over three decades, is a poetic way of thinking that emphasizes analogy over analysis, and that has close ties with the works of His- panic writers Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, and Octavio Paz; with subsequent developments in literary theory; and with Umberto Eco's idea of openness in contemporary art. Examples illustrate how instructors can create hypertext projects with their classes or use existing projects to enhance their teaching of litera- ture. Additional considerations are the possibilities, benefits, and accessibility of hypertext through the Internet, as well as the practical aspects of hypertext as an academic endeavor.
