In her final novel, Eliot's reinterpretations of Biblical myth spring from and undermine the discourse of a Judaeo-Christian patriarchy with its linear vision of history that is,hermeneutically speaking, closed off by the incarnation of God in Christ. Eliot focuses on the poetic and mythic functions of prophecy as a way of articulating her own religious ideas and of contemplating the unseen, unknown futures of Judaism and Christianity.
