This paper deals with the suction of groundwater. It appears that an approximate analysis of this phenomenon provides us with a clear insight into what happens in practice. The height of rise of water in walls is determined mainly by the relative humidity of the ambient air; the influence of gravity is generally of no importance. Several methods which are supposed to prevent water rising in walls are discussed. Finally some measurements in a church in Venice are analysed.
