Abstract: Integrating innovative theoretical work from film studies, art history, and new materialism, this article argues that a materialist reading of major epic films like the recent Dune adaptations is necessary for a sufficient understanding of Hollywood’s ongoing imperialist relationship with film production centers around the world. Placing canonical work by Vivian Sobchack alongside more recent developments in the study of landscape and cinema, such as the writings of Daniel Mann and Debashree Mukherjee, this article asks, How does cinema transform sites into sights ? Which countries or places are most affected by the landscaping effect of the cinematic image? And what role do large-format exhibition technologies like IMAX play in this process?
