This report differs from the material usually published in JNMD. The author is a professional artist, who presents with modesty and precision a method for observing children in the process of painting. Anyone who has studied nursery school children will be impressed by Mrs. Ficke's ability to reproduce directly the successive stages and the shifting valences which underlie their paintings. This sequential record of the execution of a painting adds another dimension to our understanding of the process, and the technique described here should be of value to all students of child development.
