The Hyperactive Child: Diagnosis, Management, Current Research

This book is divided into four parts. The first, and possibly the best, concerns itself with the clinical aspects, and its three chapters are written by Dr Cantwell. Part 2 has three chapters devoted to research on hyperactive children, and the three authors are James Satterfield, Edward Ritvo and Cantwell. Part 3 addresses itself to management and has five chapters that cover drug treatment, behavioral management, video-tape training for patients, educational approaches, and a critical review of therapeutic modalities. Part 4, the epilogue, again by Cantwell, deals with the medical model. The book itself illustrates the complex nature of the problem. For instance, not all authors agree on the semantics, let alone the causes. Some equate the hyperactive child with minimal brain disorders while others do not.
