The antigens which matter in immunopathology and cancer are mainly located on the cell surface. To understand the response they provoke, we need to know how material from the cell surface is processed by the immune system. Once the natural mechanisms which regulate this response are understood, we can hope to control and manipulate it. It is to this end that the studies described here are aimed.
